The long tale

By Elly Hill

Our love affair with "sausage dogs" started in 1972, when we purchased a small dog, Koko, a standard short haired dachshund in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was a great pet for our small children and great mate for me, especially when my husband was away on business. We had many adventures with him, and he was much loved.
He bit a little boy one day, and we nearly ended up in court, but the legal team negotiated their way through the drama. The boy had thrown a toy at the dog, who caught it, and would not let go. The boy hit Koko, and Koko retaliated the only way he knew and nipped the boy on the side of the face!
Koko lived with us for 15 years until he died.
After a few months without a dog, I bought Milo (a miniature long haired dachshund) for my son, and a few weeks later, we had Ziggy (of the same breed). Ziggy bore Milo five babies, two which did not survive, but sadly Milo was not to see his offspring as he was mysteriously accidentally poisoned just before the litter arrived. We kept Ziggy's daughter and the two had a wonderful life together.
Our current pooch is Kramer - he came to us as a 4 year old as his family could no longer keep him. That was 11 years ago, and he's proven to be one of the nicest dogs of all. He's gentle, loveable, funny, and lucky to be alive. He's survived three life threatening illnesses, the latest being a stroke like incident.
In his old age he's won some special priviledges, and now calls the bedroom home. But he is slower in his old age but is still king of the household, cute and cuddly.
